Salmon living in free natural habitats is called wild salmon. Its meat has a pink to dark red colour, a firm texture and a lower fat content than farmed salmon. The different wild salmon species grow up to 0,6-1,0 meters and reach four to seven years of age.

For spawning they move into rivers and die after a few weeks in freshwater. But soon the new generation is ready to move back from the rivers into the sea.
