Hoki is a member of the codlike fishes family. Home of the Hoki is the southern hemisphere, mainly New Zealand, Australia and around the oceanic trenches near Japan as well as the coast of Patagonia, as it prefers sub-antarctic waters.

While young animals live in depths of 400-1.000 meters, the adult animals can be found in depths of up to 1.500 meters. Hoki reaches a length of up to 1,2 meters, a weight of 1,5-2,0 kg and 25 years of age. Its meat is very tender.
